A Pup-tastic Guide to Supplements: Why Your Dog Needs Them

Updated: Mar 30

As a doting dog owner, you probably know the importance of providing your furry friend with a well-balanced diet. But did you know that even the best dog food might not be enough to meet all of your dog's nutritional needs? That's where supplements come in!

I'm the proud owner of three (going on four) dogs, and I've had my fair share of trial and error when it comes to finding the perfect supplements for them. After much research and experimentation, I've settled on several supplements that significantly impact my dogs' overall health and well-being.

Core Supplements:

1. SuperEssentials For Dogs

You sprinkle this daily multivitamin over your dog's food and don't skip it! SuperEssentials For Dogs is packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support immune function, skin and coat health, and joint mobility. Plus, they're made with natural ingredients and are free from artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors. It's not available on Amazon, but it's definitely worth purchasing. My #1 recommended supplement. They can be found at https://superessentialsforpets.com/ingredients/

2. Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet

Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for maintaining a healthy heart, brain, and joints in dogs. These tasty fish oil supplements from Nordic Naturals are made from wild-caught anchovies and sardines and are third-party tested for purity and potency. My adult dogs require 2oz (ml) per day; check the weight and dosage for your furry friends. Available on Amazon (affiliate link).

3.  NR HERBAL COMPOUNDS

"Are composed of seven ingredients of exceptional powers. GARLIC, RUE, SAGE, THYME, EUCALYPTUS, WORMWOOD with VEGETABLE CHARCOAL. These are truly the best herbs for disease prevention and cure! Juliette de Bairacli Levy has traveled the world with her dogs, living in primitive places, with complete Immunity with the use of this formula. The Herbal Compound formula is used extensively throughout her book. She states that she could not raise her own animals safely without the help of these herbs. These tablets stimulate immunity, maintain health and promote a cure in the sick. A must if you attend shows and for the in-whelp and nursing female. Use them daily for prevention, especially before and after your animals is exposed to any public place where other animals may have been." Otherwise, use 5 out of 7 days/week.

4. Power Probiotic for Cats & Dogs

This supplement contains a blend of probiotics and prebiotics that support digestive health and immune function in cats and dogs. It can help with everything from diarrhea and constipation to bad breath and skin allergies. Plus, it's made with natural ingredients and is free from colors, flavors, and fillers. It's also not available on Amazon, but it's worth it. You can find it here: https://www.askariel.com/pet-probiotics-p/81.htm

Additional Supplements (My dogs view them as treats):

5. Mushroom Immune Pet Chews

Mushrooms are known for their immune-boosting properties, and these Real Mushrooms chews harness organic mushrooms' power to support your dog's immune system. They contain organic extracts of turkey tail, reishi, shiitake, maitake, and chaga, which are blended with Ashwagandha, Astragalus, Blueberry, Acerola, and Olive leaf to create a supporting blend for your furry companion. I cut these in half for my adult dogs but administer them according to weight, as directed. Available on Amazon (affiliate link).

6. Ruji Naturals Superfood Supplement Bites

These bite-sized treats are made with organic superfoods like kale, blueberries, and chia seeds, which are packed with vitamins and antioxidants that support overall health and vitality. They're also free from grains, fillers, and artificial ingredients. Available on Amazon (affiliate link).

Of course, it's always important to consult your veterinarian before starting your dog on new supplements. But if you're looking to give your pup an extra boost of nutrition, these five supplements are a great place to start. Your dog will thank you!

Often, I'll provide these supplements five days out of the week. If traveling, I may provide all seven days—it just depends on the situation!
